Giving Meaning to GI Web Service Descriptions

چکیده

Composition of web services based on currently available descriptions such as WSDL are error-prone because the meaning (or semantics) of the labels used in these syntactic descriptions is unclear. We identify three types of problems that can result from semantically heterogeneous descriptions during service composition. These problems call for a Semantic Reference System for semantically annotating symbols, i.e. referencing symbols to concepts and semantically grounding these concepts. We present a three-level architecture for such a Semantic Reference System and illustrate how it can be used for solving the problems identified. Our example for illustration purposes is taken from the domain of disaster management and focuses on the composition of geographic information services.

Giving Meaning to GI Web Service Descriptions (Extended Abstract)

Current GI service composition based on syntactic descriptions such as WSDL are error-prone because the meaning of the labels used in these descriptions is unclear. These problems call for a Semantic Reference System for semantically annotating symbols, referencing s...

Ontology-based discovery and composition of geographic information services

Spatial data infrastructures will greatly benefit from the ability to compose geographic information (GI) services to solve complex problems. Discovering suitable services for data access and geoprocessing are major challenges in this endeavour. Current (keyword-based) approaches to service discovery are inherently restricted by the ambiguities of natural language, which can lead to low precisi...

Query Languages for Semantic Web Services

Even though service discovery is one of the vital steps in Web service invocation, service requests are usually expressed by rather simple means. While syntax-based service descriptions are usually addressed using keyword-based queries, Semantic Web Services are queried using “perfect” service descriptions. Hence, a service requester is not able to control the outcome of the discovery process i...

On the Semantics of Functional Descriptions of Web Services

Functional descriptions are a central pillar of Semantic Web services. Disregarding details on how to invoke and consume the service, they shall provide a black box description for determining the usability of a Web service for some request or usage scenario with respect to the provided functionality. The creation of sophisticated semantic matchmaking techniques as well as exposition of their c...

Infusing Semantics in WSDL Web Service Descriptions to Enhance Service Composition and Discovery

Semantic information can significantly enhance web service discovery and composition in large domains, such those facilitated by cloud infrastructure. If semantics awareness is achieved, locating the appropriate web services can be performed taking into account the actual meaning of the information included in the web service descriptions. Furthermore, semantic relaxation is possible; in such c...
